Chapter 16 - The Endocrine System - Review Questions - Critical Thinking and Clinical Application Questions - Page 629: 3b

Answer

The condition is called gigantism in children. In adults it goes by the name acromegaly

Work Step by Step

Johnny's condition is gigantism because his tumor and symptoms developed before the hypophyseal plates of his long bones had closed (calcified). If his tumor had developed after the closser of his hypophyseal plates at puberty he would be an acromegalic. Gigantism is rare and is marked mostly by great increase in stature. Acromegaly starts after puberty, is more common, and is marked by large misshapen hands and fingers, jaws, teeth and tongues.
