Chapter 12 - The Central Nervous System - Review Questions - Page 481: 34c

Answer

The tectospinal is one of the major descending pathways of the spinal cord . Its major function is to control and adjust the tone and contractions of skeletal muscles of the head and neck as one tries to track or follow a moving object with one's eyes( gaze). The fibers in this tract decussate, so control is contralateral. If the tract is severed, tracking would be impaired or become impossible. However, the actual degree of muscle deficit on a given side would depend on which arm of the tract above the decussation was cut.

Work Step by Step

The tectospinal descending motor tract controls the muscles of the neck and shoulder that we use to track or follow a moving object with our eyes. If this tract was severed before or after decussation tracking would be impaired.
