Astrocytes are the most abundant glial cells in central nervous system. Function of astrocytes is to repair nervous system and provide physical support. It is also a component of blood brain barrier and plays a role in removal of excess neurotransmitter. It contains glycogen that can fuel neurons with glucose in times of high glucose consumption and shortage. It also regulates ion concentration in extracellular space especially potassium.
