Synostoses are bony joints. In this type of articulation bone meets bone. Usually, in the young, there is some cartilage or collagenous fibers in the gap between the bones. However, as infants develop, the intervening cartilage or fibrous tissue ossifies and the bones fuse. This is seen in the fusion of the right and left halves of infant mandibles

The frontal suture of the human cranium is usually closed by the age eight years, but the coronal suture (between frontal and parietal bones) may not close until age 40. The saggital suture is sometimes not fully ossified in old age.
