The two basic characteristics used in classifying joints are: 1. The manner in which the adjacent bones are joined to each other ( one another). For examples there are bony joints ( bone joined to bone); cartilaginous joints ( bones joined by hyaline cartilage ) and bones joined by collagen fibres or fibrocartlage.

2. How freely the bones in the joints can move. Ball and socket joints ( shoulder joint) are the most freely movable joints.. Hinge joints ( elbow and knee) allow flexion and extension Plane joints of the wrist ( carpals) allow only gliding movements. Suture joints allow no movements at all.
