It is a sigmoid (S -shaped) bone in the upper thorax The following are some of its outstanding features: Shape: It is It is rounder on its superior surface and flattened on its inferior surface. The rougher inferior surface provide areas for the attachment of muscles. The medial end of the the bone is rounder and is called the sternal end. The lateral end, the acromial end is flatter and larger. Another feature of the clavicle is the conoid process a roughened tuberosity near the acromial end that affords points of attachments for ligaments.

The following are some of the functions of the clavicle: a. It braces the shoulder and keeps the upper limbs away from the midline of the body. b. It transmits forces from from the arms to the axial region of the body. c. The clavicles keep the pectoralis muscles from pulling the shoulders forward into a hunched posture. Note: The right clavicle is usually stronger and shorter in a right-handed person.
