Answer

There are twelve pairs of ribs; all are attached to the vertebral column (proximally/dorsally), but not all are attached to the sternum(distally/ventrally). Vertebral attachment of typical ribs Ribs 2-9 have typical articulations with the vertebral column a. The head is more or less wedge-shaped and is usually positioned between the bodies of two vertebrae-- the superior vertebra, and the vertebra of the same number. There is an articular facet on each side of each head: one facet articulates with the vertebra of the same (corresponding) number; the other facet articulates with the superior vertebra-- of the number next above that of the relevant rib. b. This group of vertebrae (plus 1 and 10) each has a roughened area called the tubercle which lies just beyond the neck. This area of the rib articulates with the transverse costal facet of the vertebra of the same number. All the ribs except 11 and 12 articulate with a transverse costal facet.

Work Step by Step

Vertebral attachments of ribs 1, 10, 11 and 12. a. The heads of these ribs bear a single articular facet for attachment/articulation with a single facet on the body of the vertebra of the same number. Rib #s 1 and 10, each also articulates with a transverse costal facet, but ribs 11 an 12 do not.
