Chapter 8 - Section 8.1 - Overview of the Skeleton - Before You Go On - Page 232: 1

Answer

The major components of the axial skeleton are the skull, auditory ossicles, hyoid bone, vertebral column, and thoracic cage (ribs and sternum). The appendicular skeleton includes the bones of the upper limbs and pectoral girdle and the bones of the lower limbs and pelvic girdle.

Work Step by Step

The axial skeleton forms the central supporting column of the body. It pirmarily includes the skull, vertebral column, and thoracic cage. Because of the location of the auditory ossicles and the hyoid bone, they are also included in the axial skeleton. The appendicular skeleton includes the body's appendages (arms and legs). The appendicular skeleton includes the bones of pectoral and pelvic girdle as well as all the bones found in the upper and lower limbs. (pg 230)
