Chapter 7 - Section 7.1 - Tissues and Organs of the Skeletal System - Before You Go On - Page 205: 1

Answer

Five tissues of bone are compact (dense) bone, spongy (cancellous) bone, bone marrow, nerves, and blood vessels. Other tissues include cartilage, the endosteum, and the periosteum.

Work Step by Step

Compact (dense) bone is often found as the hard outer shell of the bone. Spongy (cancellous) bone is the more loosely organized bone often found in the ends of long bones and sandwiched between two layers of dense bone in flat bones. Bone marrow is found in the marrow cavity of the bone. Nerves and blood vessels innervate the bone for coordination and nutrient supply. Articular cartilage is found on joint surfaces where two bones meet. The periosteum covers the bone in a sheath while the endosteum lines the internal bone marrow cavity.
