Metaplasia simply means change of cell type. An example is the change of glandular epithelium to squamous non-secretory epithelium: this is not necessarily a pathologic change. Neoplasia is new growth. Neoplastic cells grow aggressively, and often develop into invasive tumors (or cancers).
