Fig 20.32 The ovaries and the testes begin their embryonic development near the kidneys. Subsequently, they descend to the pelvic cavity (ovaries) and to the scrotum (testes).

The gonadal veins elongate as the gonads descend. They become long slender veins that drain into the left renal vein on the left ( left gonadal), and into the inferior vena cava on the right ( right gonadal)--just below the right renal vein.
