Chapter 14 - Section 14.1 - Overview of the Brain - Before You Go On - Page 510: 1

Answer

The three major parts of the brain are the cerebrum, the cerebellum, and the brainstem. The brainstem is a vertical stalk at the base of the skull with the cerebrum perched on top like a mushroom cap. The cerebellum occupies the posterior cranial fossa inferior to the cerebrum.

Work Step by Step

The cerebrum has two hemispheres and takes up about 83% of the brain’s volume. The cerebrum is responsible for most of the higher level thinking, such as studying, planning, emotions, and moving. The cerebellum, which helps with balance and motor coordination, is nestled inferiorly in a posterior fossa. The brainstem handles such functions as cardiovascular control, breathing, and thermoregulation. It is located above the foramen magnum and rises vertically. The cerebrum sits right on top of the brainstem.
