Chapter 12 - Section 12.1 - Study Guide - Assess Your Learning Outcomes - Page 471: 4

Answer

The ANS carries signals to glands, smooth muscle, and cardiac muscle and operates at an unconscious level. The two divisions of the ANS are the sympathetic division and the parasympathetic division. The sympathetic division is the “fight or flight” response division. The parasympathetic division is the “rest and digest” division.

Work Step by Step

We usually don’t have any voluntary control over the ANS. It operates and governs itself. The two divisions of the ANS are two extremes of arousal and relaxation. The sympathetic division tends to arouse the body for action. It dilates the pupils, increases heart rate, dilates the bronchioles, and inhibits digestion. The parasympathetic division tends to calm the body. It constricts the pupils, stimulates digestion, and slows the heart rate.
