Chapter 12 - Section 12.1 - Study Guide - Assess Your Learning Outcomes - Page 471: 3

Answer

The difference between the CNS and the PNS is location. The CNS is the brain and spinal cord and the PNS is everything else. The sensory division of the PNS receives information from receptors and transmits it to the CNS. The motor division of the PNS receives orders from the CNS and transmits them to effectors to be carried out. The somatic subdivision of the PNS controls skeletal muscle and is mostly voluntary. The visceral subdivision of the PNS controls glands, smooth muscle, and cardiac muscle and is involuntary.

Work Step by Step

The CNS is the brain and spinal cord. The PNS is everything else outside the brain and spinal cord. The sensory division senses and the motor division moves and acts. The somatic division carries signals to skeletal muscles. The visceral division carries signals to glands, cardiac muscle, and smooth muscle.
