Actually there is a microscopic gap or cleft between presynaptic neuron and postsynaptic neuron. This is called the synaptic cleft. The term synapse is more accurately thought of as the whole structure involving the end of the presynaptic neuron, the beginning of the postsynaptic neuron, and the synaptic cleft.
