Chapter 11 - Section 11.5 - Behavior of Whole Muscles - Before You Go On - Page 418: 18

Answer

Isometric contraction of a muscle is contraction without change in length. Examples are holding the plank posture in Yoga Standing stationary and holding a fairly heavy object in front of you without moving or lifting it for 20 -30 seconds

Work Step by Step

Isotonic contraction. Contraction of muscle with a change in length but no change in tension. This kind of contraction occurs in many ordinary gym exercises such as squats, push-ups and pull-downs on resistance machines First, internal tension builds until it overcomes resistance; then the muscle shortens, moves the load and maintains the same tension.
