Answer

The medical explanation for the existence of certain human features, and processes lie in understanding the evolutionary history of the species.. Thus when a medical student, anatomist, or physician seeks explanations for the existence of certain human features like the auricularis muscle, the human appendix, human body hair, and the human coccyx, he/she is less likely to be puzzled, if he/she knows that these are vestigial features. Vestigial structures are structures that were perfectly functional in the past, but now serve no useful purpose becauses of evolutionary changes in animals-- driven by selective pressures.

Work Step by Step

Some physicians routinely remove appendices , if they have to go into the abdominal cavity for any other reason. Also, when I was a child surgeons on my village hospitals routinely removed children's tonsils which they considered vestigial organs.
