Anton Van Leeuwenhoek was a contemporary of Robert Hooke. He invented microscopes with lens that had superior resolution to those used in Hooke's microscopes. With his microscopes he was able to see blood cells, capillaries, sperms and bacteria. Hooke and Leeuwenhoek made invaluable contributions to microscopy and established the observational evidence for the cell theory.
