Chapter 1 - Section 1.5 - Assess Your Understanding - Vocabulary and Skill Building - Page 42: 1

Answer

A question in which there are several options to answer that specific question is said to be a closed question. A question that enables the respondent to choose his or her response is known as an open question. The advantage of a closed question is that one can easily analyze the answer because of several options for a single question. On the other hand, it has a disadvantage also that the options need to be arranged in an order that the respondent makes choices with those options that come earlier in the list. Similarly, an open question has its own benefits. It lets one answer the particular question more accurately according to his or her understanding. The disadvantage of an open question is that sometimes there comes a situation when it becomes confusing because there are many options for a particular question.
