Chapter 2 - Summarizing and Graphing Data - 2-4 Graphs That Enlighten and Graphs That Deceive - Page 73: 25

Answer

Actors are generally older than actresses on average when they win an Oscar.

Work Step by Step

We see that the data in Appendix B are in 10 columns. Thus, we assign each column a number, with the left column being the number 0 and the right column being the number 9. We now can create our stem and leaf plot. In order to create a stem and leaf plot, create a central column with the numbers 2 through 8 in it. (These correspond to the decade of the actor's life the Oscar is won in. For instance, if they are 35, the 5 would go into column 3.) Putting the actors on the left side of the central column and the actresses on the right side of the central column, repeat this process until all of the data are plotted. After doing this, we see that actors are generally older than actresses on average when they win an Oscar.
