Chapter 10 - Section 10.1 - Systems of Linear Equations in Two Variables - 10.1 Exercises - Page 688: 10

Answer

x = 5 y = 1

Work Step by Step

1. First decide what variable you want to cancel out first. I chose to cancel out X first 2. For canceling out X, I multiplied the first equation by 2 to get the X's on both equations to have the same constant out in front 3. Multiplying the first equation by 2 should get you 4X + 10Y = 30 4. Now, to cancel out the 4X from both equations, we are gonna subtract the equation from each other 5. Subtracting the equations will cancel out the X's and be left with 9Y = 9 , in which solving for Y gives you Y =1 6. Now plug in Y = 1 for either equation. I chose to plug it into the second equation but the first equation will work fine as well 7. Plugging into second equation should get you 4X + 1 = 21, solving for X you should get X = 5 8. Even if you plugged Y = 1 into the first equation, you should be getting the same answer of X = 5 9. That is how you get your answers of X = 5 and Y = 1
