Chapter 1 - Section 1.10 - Lines - 1.10 Exercises - Page 115: 33

Answer

$y=3x-3$ or, in general form, $3x-y-3=0$

Work Step by Step

$x$-intercept $1;$ $y$-intercept $-3$ Use the slope-intercept form of the equation of a line, which is $y=mx+b$, where $m$ is the slope and $b$ is the $y$-intercept. The intercepts of the line are given and these are obviously points through which the line passes. These points are $(1,0)$ and $(0,-3)$. Use them to find the slope of the line: $m=\dfrac{y_{2}-y_{1}}{x_{2}-x_{1}}=\dfrac{-3-0}{0-1}=\dfrac{-3}{-1}=3$ Substitute $m$ and the $y$-intercept into the formula to obtain the equation of this line: $y=mx+b$ $y=3x-3$ or, in general form, $3x-y-3=0$
