Answer

The national debt of Japan is $3,000,000,000,000 in standard notation and $3 x 10^12 in scientific notation.

Work Step by Step

So to start with, you must first observe the bar graph. At the left side of the graph, you can see the given national debt values in trillion dollars; at the bottom side of the graph, you can see the six different countries. Since we must estimate the national debt of Japan based on the bar graph, we must first locate the position of Japan in the bar graph. Japan is the country placed after Luxembourg and before France. Now that we have spotted the location of Japan, it is time to locate and estimate the value of Japan's national debt: to do that, we must horizontally align the tip of the blue shaded region of Japan and the value of the national debt at the left side. The tip of the blue shaded region of Japan directly lies at the number 3, which means that the national debt of Japan is 3 triillion. Now to convert 3 trillion into a standard notation, you must remember that a million has 6 zeroes (1,000,000 and 1 x 10^6), a billion has 9 zeroes (1,000,000,000 and 1 x 10^9), and a trillion has 12 zeroes (1,000,000,000,000 and 1 x 10^12). We just have to change the value of 1 to 3 based on the information stated above. So, one trillion dollars: $1,000,000,000,000 (in standard notation) $1 x 10^12 (in scientific notation) just change the number 1 in one trillion dollars into 3 like this, three trillion dollars $3,000,000,000,000 (in standard notation) $3 x 10^12 (in scientific notation) and now you have the answer! The national debt of Japan is $3,000,000,000,000 in standard notation and $3 x 10^12 in scientific notation.
