Chapter 7 - Algebra: Graphs, Functions, and Linear Systems - 7.1 Graphing and Functions - Exercise Set 7.1 - Page 419: 77

Answer

(a) Consider the given function: $G\left( x \right)=-0.01{{x}^{2}}+x+60$ Substitute, the value of x as 30 in the above equation. G( 30)=-0.01{ 30}^{2}+( 30)+60 =-9+30+60 =81% The above value obtained from the function shows the wage gap. It shows the wage gap of women’s earnings relative to men’s in the year 2010. Hence, the value of $G\left( 30 \right)$is 81%. (b) Consider the data shown by the bar graph. It shows that the wage gap in the year 2010 is 83%. The difference between the value obtained from the function and the value shown by the bar graph is $83-81=2%$. Here, it shows $G\left( 30 \right)$underestimate the actual data shown by the graph by 2%. This value underestimates the actual data shown in the graph by 2%.
