Chapter 13 - Voting and Apportionment - 13.1 Voting Methods - Exercise Set 13.1 - Page 852: 48

Answer

Soup A was the winner when we used the plurality method. However, soup B was selected the winner when we used the Borda count method, the plurality-with-elimination method, and the pairwise comparison method. Based on these results, it seems that soup B is the best soup to buy.

Work Step by Step

Initially, one might be tempted to buy soup A because it received the highest number of first-place votes. We can see this when we review exercise 27 which used the plurality method. However, when we review exercises 28-30, we can see that soup B was selected the winner when we used the Borda count method, the plurality-with-elimination method, and the pairwise comparison method. Based on these results, it seems that soup B is the best soup to buy.
