Chapter 1 - Problem Solving and Critical Thinking - 1.2 Estimation, Graphs, and Mathematical Models - Exercise Set 1.2 - Page 27: 46

Answer

a. Based on the graph, it appears that about 65 of 100 people (65%) spelled cemetery correctly. b. Also based on the graph, it appears that about 28% spelled supersede correctly. Therefore, about 2700 more people spelled cemetery than supersede correctly.

Work Step by Step

a. On the graph, it appears that the bar for the correct spelling of cemetery is halfway between 60 and 70, therefore, the estimate is 65 out of 100. b. The graph appears to show that about 28% of people (28 of 100) spelled supersede correctly. Since we are asked to estimate how many more spelled cemetery correctly, we can use 7200 as an estimate for the number of people surveyed. 65% of 7200 is 4680. 28% spelled supersede correctly, 27% of 7200 is about 2016. IF we subtract those numbers we get 2664 more spelling cemetery correctly.
