Chapter 7 - Functions - Exercise Set 7.1 - Page 393: 1

Answer

a) Domain: {1,3,5} Co-Domain: {s,t,u,v} b) f(1)= v , f(3)=s, f(5)=v c) Range: {s,v} d) Yes, No e)3, Doesn't exist, {1,5} f) ({1,v}, {3,s}, {5,v})

Work Step by Step

a) The domain is all of the numbers that X can take, the co-domain is all of the numbers that Y can take. b) By following the arrows on the diagram, we can see that the function f maps 1 to v, 3 to s, and 5 to v. c) The range of f is all the numbers that f maps on to. d) We see that 3 maps to s, therefore, in reverse s maps to 3, 1 maps on to v, therefore, u is not the reverse image of 1. e) Following the arrows in reverse we see that s maps to 3 and v maps to both 1 and 5. There are no arrows that point to u therefore, it has no solution that exists on our domain. f) Ordered pairs are just stating what each number on the domain maps on to.
