When you round to the nearest cent, you are rounding to the nearest hundredth place. To round 0.996 to the nearest cent, draw a "cut-off" line after the hundredths place: "0.99". Next, look at the first number after the cut-off line: "6". If the number is 5 or above, round up to the nearest cent: "1.00". Note: Rounding to hundredths means two decimal places, so be sure to add "0's to the tenths and hundredths places (1.00, not 1.0 or 1).
