Chapter 0 - Before Calculus - 0.1 Functions - Exercises Set 0.1 - Page 13: 11

Answer

(a) The graph of population versus time will not be a continuous curve. This is because there will always be births and deaths of people. (b) There will be a decrease in concentration for approximately 8 hours, then an increase after the next injection followed by a decrease for another 8 hours. The process will repeat itself.

Work Step by Step

(a) The curve will not be continuous because there will always be a change in population with time. New babies will be born and some people will die due to different circumstances such as old age, war, illness and epidemic. Thus, the curve will not be continuous. (b) Concentration will reduce due to the absorption of the antibodies by the tissues for about 8 hours. The injection of another antibodies after 8 hours will create a sharp increase in concentration and it will decrease again as the tissues absorb the antibodies. The process will be repeated until the patient stops receiving the injection.
