Chapter 0 - Before Calculus - 0.1 Functions - Exercises Set 0.1 - Page 12: 2

Answer

(a) $x=-1$ and $x=4$ (b) no value (c) $y=-1$ (d) $x=5$, $x=3$ and $x=0$ (e) Maximum value of $y$ is $9$ at $x=6$ and minimum value of $y$ is $-2$ at $x=0$.

Work Step by Step

(a) Use table and find values of $x$ corresponding to $y=1$. We get $x=-1$ and $x=4$. (b)Since, $3$ is not among the values of $y$ in the table. There are no value of $x$ for $y=3$. (c)Use table and find values of $y$ corresponding to $x=3$. We get $y=-1$. (d)Since, $y\leq0$ $y$ can be equal to zero or $y$ can be negative. Use table and find values of $x$ corresponding to $y=0$ or $y$ being negative. we get $x=5$, $x=3$ and $x=0$ (e) Use table to find the maximum and minimum values of $y$. We get maximum value $9$ and minimum value $-2$. Now, use table and find value of $x$ corresponding to $y=9$. We get $x=6$. Now, again use table and find values of $x$ corresponding to $y=-2$. We get $x=0$.
