Like terms contain the same variables raised to the same powers. For example, 3x and -8x are like terms, because they contain the same variable x and are raised to the same power. 3x and 4y are not like terms, because they contain different variables. 3x and $3x^{2}$ are not like terms. Although they contain the same variable, they are not raised to the same powers.
