Chapter 10 - Section 10.2 - The Ellipse and the Hyperbola - Exercise Set: 4

Hyperbola

Work Step by Step

The difference between the equation of an ellipse and a hyperbola is the following: Ellipse formula: $\frac{x^2}{a}+\frac{y^2}{b} = 1$ Hyperbola formula: $\frac{x^2}{a}-\frac{y^2}{b} = 1$ The ellipse formula has two positive terms while the hyperbola formula has one positive term and one negative term. Using this observation, we get this equation to be a hyperbola.
