Chapter 2 - Section 2.3 - Functions - 2.3 Exercises - Page 200: 17

Answer

The relation is a function. Domain: All real numbers Range: All real numbers

Work Step by Step

If given a relation in the form of a graph, you want to apply the vertical line test. If you can draw a vertical line through every point that forms the relation and it only intersects the line once, it is a function. Meaning, that every value of x is mapped to exactly one value of y. As for the domain, which describes the x-values, the graph continues to the left and right infinitely because the arrows indicate so. The domain will cover every x-value from negative infinity to positive infinity-- we call this all real numbers. As for the range, which describes the y-values, the graph continues upward and downward infinitely because the arrows indicate so. The range will cover every y-value from negative infinity to positive infinity-- we call this all real numbers.
