Chapter 3 - Section 3.4 - Slope and Rate of Change - Exercise Set: 72

Answer

No it cannot. In the numerator, the $y$ value of the first point is subtracted from the $y$ value of the second point. However, in the denominator, the $x$ value of the second point is subtracted from the $x$ value of the first point. The $x$ and $y$ value of the same point must be placed first in a slope calculation. So the correct calculation should've been: $\frac{1-3}{-5-2}$
