Chapter 2 - Section 2.4 - An Introduction to Problem Solving - Exercise Set - Page 139: 79

Answer

Rectangle #1 - 10 % of adults in the polled group found this rectangle the most pleasing. Rectangle #2 - 25% of adults in the polled group found this rectangle the most pleasing. Rectangle #3 - 65% of adults in the polled group found this rectangle the most pleasing. With Rectangle #3 being the "golden rectangle," it was definitely the favored rectangle in the group. While 65% is not 75%, it is close and leads me to believe if I had a bigger sample size that I would get closer to 75%.

Work Step by Step

I drew three rectangles: the first one had a length that was 2.6 times its width, the second had a length that was 1.2 times its width and the last had a length of 1.6 times its width. Out of 20 adults, here were the results: a. Rectangle #1 (L=2.6xW) = 2 adults b. Rectangle #2 (L=1.2xW) = 5 adults c. Rectangle #3 (L=1.6xW) = 13 adults
