Substitution is where you solve for either x or y in one of the equations, and then substitute that in for that value in the other equation, whereas in elimination you make either the x or y values in each equation equal and opposite (ex. 4x and -4x) so when you add them together, they eliminate each other, so you can then solve for the remaining variable.
