Electronic polarization gives rise to absorption and refraction. Polarization causes some energy to be absorbed. Additionally, due to the fact that light waves travel at slightly slower velocities as they travel through a medium other than a vacuum, the direction in which they propagate changes slightly. This is known as refraction.
