Chapter 15 - Characteristics, Applications, and Processing of Polymers - Questions and Problems - Page 632: 15.31

Answer

Among polyethylene, polypropylene, poly(vinyl chloride), PET polyester, and polycarbonate, the suitable polymers for the fabrication of a cup to contain hot coffee are polystyrene and polycarbonate. Considering the glass transition temperature on which amorphous polymer begins to soften and taking note that the maximum temperature for a hot coffee is below 100°C, based on Table 15.2, the two said polymers have glass transition temperatures greater than 100°C.
