Chapter 1 - 1.6 - Problems - Introduction to Circuit Elements - Page 40: P1.53

Answer

In order to connect all three elements in series, first draw a square of circular wire. Then, attach each element--the resistor, the current generator, and the voltage generator--on the path of the wire, making it so that there is no way to go through the whole loop without going through all three.

Work Step by Step

Once we have made the circuit, we need to address the four different ways in which the elements can be connected in the given configuration. Thus, in your first diagram, arbitrarily define the direction of the current and the positive and negative of the voltage source. In the second figure, switch the positive and negative of the voltage source and leave the current in the same direction. In the third figure, switch the direction of the original current and leave the originally defined positive and negative of the battery the same. Finally, in the fourth figure, switch both the defined direction of the current generator and the positive and negative of the battery.
