Chapter 19 - Part VI - Earnings and Discrimination - Problems and Applications - Page 411: 5

Answer

I think the option to attend but keep the education a secret would be better. The first firm (or two) to employ me with a degree might find out that I don't have natural ability (under the signaling theory). However, having knowledge would be more beneficial under the human-capital theory.

Work Step by Step

Under the signaling theory, the degree would show that I have natural ability. The human-capital theory would have the degree show that I am a more productive worker. If I attended the college but didn't have the degree, then I would be adversely affected under the signaling theory. However, under the human-capital theory, the education I received would make me more productive.
