Chapter 6 - Variable Costing and Segment Reporting: Tools for Management - Questions - Page 259: 6-3

Answer

Fixed manufacturing overhead costs are shifted from one period to another under absorption costing due to changes in inventories. Units that are produced are assigned some fixed manufacturing cost. If the unit is not sold during that period, the fixed manufacturing cost assigned to the unit will become part of the inventory and listed on the balance sheet instead of the cost of goods sold.
