Hardy's portrayal of these two men is purposeful, and yes, he certainly seems to be biased towards Angel's character. In the novel, Hardy addresses social class in detail... Tess' inability to move between classes, Angel's precarious position as neither a member of the upper class nor a working person, and Alec's position as the spoiled, monied, rich boy, who does as he pleases with no thought of repurcussion. Hardy does not, however, create Angel's character without flaws. We root for Angel over and over again, and yet, it is virtually impossible to forgive his rejection of Tess.
