Tess has many sorrowful situations. Tess's father is a drunk who sends her away thinking that he is part of some family of nobility. Tess is raped by Alec and her "love" Angel leaves her thinking that she is "used goods". Tess handles it the only way she can, she perceivers. Tess often loses herself in her work. Tess simply keeps going. There is always a sense of pathos to Tess but her troubles do not destroy her. Tess always believes there is something better and that she and Angel are truly in love.
