For Alec, everything relating to Tess is about control and desire. He believed that his social status and wealth gave him the right to possess and control Tess after he gives her a job caring for his mother's chickens. After seducing Tess, however, he reforms and becomes a fundamentalist preacher, only to regress into his previous behaviors after he sees Tess again.
