Do you think the novel’s characterization of Angel is entirely consistent?

Angle is initially portrayed as intelligent and liberal. This characterization, however, is not consistent, as he rejects Tess after learning information about her past that contradicts his idealistic view of her. Angel isn't as liberal as he would like us to believe.
