I disagree with this statement. Let's put this in context here. Alec does not seduce Tess, he rapes her. Tess is an indentured milkmaid. She has no power. Alec is a forceful aritocrat with all the power. Tess has little choice but to ride home with Alec. She had just been accosted by a crazy lady and Alec comes along and offers a "seemingly" safe ride home. The fact that Tess gets raped is not her fault. It is pretty sad when, even today, people can blame a rape victim for the rape. Tess's circumstance was no different. She was exausted in the forrest with a creep who had all the physical and economic power.
