Dick Diver and destruction

My essay must contain the premises:

Self betrayal
Excesses of the 20s
Survival of the fittest

How could I incorporate these into a thesis statement? I am ok with self-betrayal and excesses, but cannot include the third - survival of the fittest to come up with a thesis.

Any help would be appreciated.
