  1. 1

Explain the philosophical significance of Tao.

Tzu insists, “Tao (The Way) can be infused into the nature and put to use without being exhausted. It is so deep and subtle like an abyss that is the origin of all things. It is complete and perfect as wholeness can Round off sharp edges .” Tao offers guidance to lead a wholesome and satisfying existence; moreover, tao eliminates misunderstandings and exalts an individual. The principles of Tao are useful for all who desire contentment, peace and unity in their existence.

  2. 2

    How does Tao aid saints?

Tzu elucidates, “The heavy is the fundamental of the light. Tranquillity is the master of agitation. Therefore, the saint always conducts himself with the essence of Tao and never departs from It. Although he is surrounded by the splendor of wealth, he remains to live a simple and ordinary life.” Tao guides saints so that they would rise above the temptations and failures that are inherent among humanity. It enables them to embrace simplicity. Tao offers an ideal framework for individuals who yearn for saint-like experiences.

  3. 3

How does Tzu differentiate between superior and inferior virtues?

Tzu writes, “A man of superior virtue is not conscious of being virtuous, hence is truly virtuous. A man of inferior virtue performs for the purpose of virtue; hence he is not virtuous. A man of superior virtue acts without action, and performs with his true nature.” Authentic virtues come out naturally; they are neither acted nor forced. Comparatively, individuals who insist on being virtuous are not. Performance of virtue is a superficial; hence, not genuine. Virtue should come out unconsciously for it to be genuine.
