Why was Maya confused when Mrs. Fisher offered her words of encouragement?

Paul's mother thought she would be encouraging to Maya because she was playing on a co-ed team.... she thought Maya needed the encouragement. Maya was confused because in actuality.... she is the top scorer in the country. She doesn't need much encouragement.
