Why does the coach, Betty Bright, tell paul he won't take the place of one of her starting players?

Ms. Bright is upfront with Paul, telling him he's not going to come onto the team, replace one of her starters, and then decide to return to Lake Windsor Middle School. She is completely honest, and Paul completely accepts her decision.
